Plot synopsis

Main plot

Claudia is forced to return to seventh grade. When getting a tutor, Rosa, is not enough to bring her grades up enough to a pass, Claudia must repeat to relearn the basics. Claudia struggles with leaving her friends behind, and not being allowed to attend the eighth grade Halloween dance. Eventually, Claudia realises she is understanding the concepts being taught, and even gets a 96% on a math test.

Secondary plot

Claudia gets accepted into a master class for "accomplished amateur artists" with Serena McKay at the Stoneybrook Community College. She is the youngest person in the class, and ends up winning the award in the art exhibit at the end of the course.

Jackie Rodowsky is recovering from a bicycle accident in hospital. Kristy comes up with the idea of Hospital Buddies, where babysitting charges write letters to children in the hospital. The day after Halloween they throw a party for the kids in the hospital and share their Halloween candy.
